A heart for the poor

It’s easy to say we care for the poor. Everyone says they care for the poor.

What if we actually try to do it? And what if we put as much emphasis on loving the poor as the bible does? Now that’s a serious challenge.

God’s heart for the poor is one of the great themes of scripture, with over 2,000 verses on the subject. Levitical law commanded the Israelites not to reap all of the harvest, but leave some ‘for the poor and the alien’. The prophet Micah proclaimed, ‘Practice justice, love mercy and walk humbly before your God’. John the Baptist taught ‘He who has two coats, give to him who has none’. And Jesus himself commands us to ‘Give to everyone who asks you’.

We know we’ve got a long way to go, but here’s what we currently do at Rev:

Everyday radical love
It starts with ordinary, everyday life. We’re all called to clothe the naked, feed the hungry and care for the sick – and we meet people with these needs every day in our city. It’s about stopping to talk when all you want to do is walk on by like everyone else. Developing a compassionate and humble heart is vital to living a godly life.

A budget for the poor
We’re committed to giving an increasing proportion of our budget year-on-year to sustainable, Gospel-preaching, church-centred relief for those trapped by poverty and injustice.

Debt counselling
Our CAP debt counselling centre in Camden shows God’s love in action by providing sustainable poverty relief through debt counselling, advice and practical help. Find more information about it here.

Homeless outreach
Since 2008 we’ve run a weekly ‘soup run’ among the homeless around Euston. We share lunch with our friends who are on the streets, spend time enjoying a chat and pray together.

Foodbank
More and more of our neighbours in Camden and Islington are living beneath the poverty line. Knowing the need in the area, we are in the process of setting up a food bank. You can follow our progress on the facebook page.

Asylum seeker drop-in
Our Asylum seeker and refugee gospel community runs Global Cafe every two weeks in term time, providing a hot meal and English classes.
